On May 29, 2020, at the online forum for International Mountain Tourism Day, the "World Mountain Tourism Development Trends Report (2020 Edition)" was officially released by Francesco Frangialli, Council Member of the International Mountain Tourism Alliance and Honorary Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This report is the first comprehensive document on global mountain tourism trends, jointly compiled by the International Mountain Tourism Alliance, the Sino-French Mountain Tourism Development Research Institute, Trip.com Group, and Tripadvisor.
The report consolidates data from mountain tourism destinations and service platforms worldwide. Through extensive case studies and data analysis, it estimates the global mountain tourism visitor numbers and total revenue. According to statistics, in 2019, the number of mountain tourists worldwide (including overnight domestic and international visitors) reached 1.22 billion, with global mountain tourism revenue amounting to $1.36 trillion.
The report also defines mountain tourism, mountain tourism destinations, and mountain tourists. It provides a detailed analysis of the development history and current status of mountain tourism in six regions—Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, and Oceania—over the past two decades. Additionally, it forecasts future trends in global mountain tourism, with a particular focus on analyzing and predicting the mountain tourism market following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In the future, mountain tourism will continue to demonstrate its ability to foster vitality, promote employment, alleviate poverty, and enhance local appeal.
