Mangshan Mountain in Yizhang County, Chenzhou, Hunan, lies at the northern foot of the Nanling Mountains. Its highest peak, Mengkengshi, reaches 1,902 meters, hailed as a “natural museum of flora and fauna on China’s southern ridge” and the “second Xishuangbanna.” It is known for its virgin forests, unique landforms (granite peak forests), magnificent sea of clouds, and innovative barrier-free tourism facilities.

As the source of the Beijiang River, a tributary of the Pearl River, Mangshan Mountain preserves the largest area of original forest in Hunan. It is a convergence point for northern and southern Chinese plants, hosting rich endemic species like the Mangshan pit viper and South China five-needle pine. Its granite formations, weathered into shapes like General Stone and Tiantai Mountain, create rugged, peculiar landscapes. Recently, the Wuzhi Peak Scenic Area pioneered a “barrier-free mountain tourism” system with cable cars, elevators, gentle walkways, and hoists, enabling people with limited mobility, the elderly, and children to enjoy the summit—a national model.

Tourism divides into two areas: Tiantai Mountain–General Stockade (east gate) focuses on steep peaks, strange rocks, virgin forests, and waterfalls; Wuzhi Peak (west gate) features barrier-free loop trails, sea of clouds, and elevator experiences. The two are connected by cable car and can be visited together. Best in spring (April–May for azalea blooms), summer (cool retreat), and autumn (October–November for sea of clouds). Winter may bring frost. Located at the Hunan-Guangdong border, it is accessible via high-speed rail to Chenzhou West Station, then bus to Yizhang County and the scenic area.
