Risco Caido and Gran Canaria Sacred Mountains are not a traditional “mountain” but a mountainous cultural landscape in the heart of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019. It stands as a testimony to the advanced wisdom of the now-vanished indigenous culture of the Canary Islands.

Its core value lies in the seamless blend of culture and nature. The area contains numerous archaeological sites, such as the Risco Caído cave, whose ceiling features carefully designed openings that allow sunlight to precisely illuminate rock engravings during the equinoxes—likely used for astronomical observation and rituals. The surrounding “Sacred Mountains” are dotted with sanctuaries, altars, and stargazing points, reflecting the indigenous people’s deep understanding of astronomical cycles and their reverence for the mountains. Naturally, the area is characterized by steep volcanic ravines and plateaus with unique biodiversity.

Visiting here is more of a cultural and geological exploration. Guided hikes lead into the ravines to archaeological sites (some caves require prior permission to enter). Beyond the archaeological spots, the rural landscapes and traditional villages in central Gran Canaria are worth exploring. It is recommended to join a professional cultural tour from Las Palmas, the island’s capital. Thanks to the mild island climate, the area can be visited year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather.
