Yulong Snow Mountain is the southernmost major snow-capped mountain in the Northern Hemisphere. Located north of Lijiang, its 13 peaks stretch north to south, with the highest, Shanzidou, at 5,596 meters (unclimbed). Known as “Oulu” in Naxi language, meaning “Heavenly Mountain,” it is a sacred mountain and a legendary site of love-suicide in Naxi culture.

The mountain hosts China’s closest marine glaciers to the equator; the Glacier Park allows close-up encounters with ice and snow. At its base, Blue Moon Valley enchants with mineral-rich turquoise waters. Culturally, it is intertwined with the Naxi’s Dongba culture, revered as the embodiment of the protector god “Sanduo.” The open-air show “Impressions of Lijiang,” directed by Zhang Yimou, is performed against the mountain backdrop, creating a powerful experience.

Most visitors take the cable car to Glacier Park at 4,506 meters, then walk to 4,680 meters. Other cableways lead to Yak Meadow and Spruce Meadow, each offering different perspectives of pastures and peaks. Blue Moon Valley and Ganhaizi are also part of the park. Best visited in winter and spring (November–May) for the most impressive snow and glaciers. Summers are rainy and foggy. Be mindful of altitude sickness; prepare oxygen and warm layers. The scenic area is about 15 km north of Lijiang, accessible by dedicated bus.
