Designated in 2023 as an IMTA International Mountain Hiking Tourism Model Route, Nepal's Shivapuri Peak Trail lies northwest of the Kathmandu Valley, adjacent to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Its core appeal is "close-up panoramic views of the Himalayan range + authentic mountain village culture," offering an excellent blend of nature and cultural experience. Located just 20km from central Kathmandu, it's often called "Kathmandu's Backyard."

The core section is about 22km, a 2-day hike of moderate difficulty, ascending from 1,500m to the 2,732m Shivapuri Peak viewpoint. Landscapes transition from subtropical broadleaf forests at the base to temperate coniferous forests near the summit. Rhododendrons bloom in spring, while autumn brings vibrant foliage. The summit offers a 360-degree panorama of the eastern Himalayas, including peaks like Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). On clear days, the entire Kathmandu Valley is visible, creating a striking contrast between city and snow-capped peaks.
Cultural immersion is a major highlight. The trail passes through several traditional Newari villages with preserved stone-and-wood houses and temples. Hikers can visit local homes, taste traditional foods like tsampa and dal bhat, and experience local culture. Basic homestays and supply points in villages offer accommodation and meals. Public transport connects the trailhead and destination to Kathmandu. As an IMTA route, trail markers, emergency rescue points, and multilingual guidebooks have been enhanced. The best seasons are September-November and March-May, offering dry weather, high visibility, and optimal conditions for mountain views and cultural experiences.
