Tongcheng Travel: Fuel Surcharge Increase Prompts Early Summer Flight Bookings
Time:2026-05-14 16:21

According to media reports, domestic flight fuel surcharges will increase again starting May 16: for routes of 800 km (including) or less, the surcharge will rise from 60 yuan to 90 yuan; for routes over 800 km, it will rise from 120 yuan to 170 yuan — an increase of 30 yuan and 50 yuan respectively.

The recent frequent adjustments to fuel surcharges are accelerating travelers' booking decisions. According to Tongcheng Travel data, in the month before the latest fuel surcharge increase took effect, the proportion of early bookings for May Day holiday flights increased by approximately 30% compared to the same period last year. The announcement of this fuel surcharge increase has, to some extent, encouraged off-peak travel trends. Compared with the May Day holiday period, current travel costs such as flights and hotels have dropped significantly. Combined with expectations of a fuel surcharge hike, some travelers are moving up their off-peak travel plans. In addition, search volumes for summer-related flights and hotels have surged significantly this year, with some users locking in summer flight bookings early to hedge against the possibility of further cost increases.
