During the summer travel rush (July 1 – August 31), Shanghai Pudong International Airport recorded a total of 6.7 million entry-exit passenger movements, averaging nearly 110,000 per day, with passenger flow remaining consistently high. Over the same period, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport also handled 628,000 entry-exit passengers.
This summer, families with children and student groups were the main drivers of cross-border travel. Data from the Shanghai Airport Border Inspection Station shows that during the summer travel rush, a total of 2.2 million mainland residents departed from Pudong International Airport. Study tour destinations were primarily in Europe, the Americas, and Australia, with long-haul routes to Venice and Barcelona being particularly popular.
At Hongqiao International Airport, the Hongqiao Border Inspection Station processed 353,000 mainland residents traveling in and out during the summer rush. Travelers between Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong and Macao accounted for the highest proportion. According to the Hongqiao Border Inspection Station, the station processed over 290 business jets and charter flights during the summer rush, an increase of more than 10% compared with the same period last year.
While outbound tourism remained robust, inbound travel to China by foreign visitors continued to gain momentum. During the summer rush, Pudong International Airport processed over 900,000 inbound foreign travelers, up 20% year-on-year, with visa-free entrants accounting for 62% of the total inbound foreign travelers. Among inbound travelers, South Korean nationals ranked first in number, followed by nationals from Russia, Japan, the United States, Thailand, Malaysia, and other countries. Notably, the number of inbound foreign travelers through Hongqiao International Airport saw significant growth, with the Hongqiao Border Inspection Station processing a total of 130,000 foreign entry-exit passengers throughout the summer rush.
