Compared to the extreme high peaks of the western section, the Lombard Alps are somewhat more moderate in elevation. They feature broad valleys, numerous lakes, and an intricate interplay between mountains and lake basins, which not only moderates the local climate but also creates habitable and enjoyable intermontane valleys.

The large water bodies of the lakes have a high heat capacity, which reduces the temperature difference between day and night in the mountainous area, making this region warm in winter, cool in summer, and pleasantly temperate. The superior environment, nestled between mountains and lakes, has given rise to numerous hillside towns built along the slopes. Residences are scattered picturesquely on the lake-facing hillsides, exuding tranquility and comfort.

This area is not only a natural haven for locals seeking summer retreats and relaxation but also a renowned mountain resort destination in Europe. The gentle scenery of lakes and mountains softens the austere ruggedness of the Alps, adding a touch of warmth and tenderness to the mountainous landscape of northern Italy.
