On May 27, 2025, beneath the towering peaks of Mount Everest, the Everest Summiteers Summit 2025 was officially opened in Nepal. With over 700 Everest conquerors, mountaineers, and tourism industry leaders from around the world, the summit gathered to reflect on past achievements and to explore the future of mountain tourism. The theme for the summit, "Honoring the Legends, Inspiring the Future," emphasized the shared spirit of adventure and resilience that has driven climbers to the peak.
A historical homage was made during the event, where the Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation of Nepal, Badri Prasad Pandey, presented honorary certificates to both international and local Everest summiteers in recognition of their contribution to mountaineering. The event also honored the last surviving member of the 1953 expedition, Kancha Sherpa, with a "Lifetime Achievement Award," highlighting his pivotal role in mountaineering history.
This moment of honoring Everest’s legacy was followed by the release of the "Enjoying Mountain Wonders, Sharing a Beautiful Life - Everest Summiteers Summit 2025 Initiative" by Xia Boyu, the International Mountain Tourism Alliance (IMTA) Ambassador for Mountain Tourism. The initiative focuses on raising global awareness for the protection of mountain resources, preserving mountain civilizations, and promoting mountain economies and benefiting the livelihoods of mountain communities. The IMTA's commitment to the sustainable development of mountain tourism was reinforced, encouraging a harmonious coexistence between nature and society.
The Everest Summiteers Summit 2025 and the related initiative serve as an important step toward fostering global collaboration. The alliance encourages climbers, travelers, and industry leaders to adopt sustainable practices in their journeys, ensuring that the legacy of mountains, both natural and cultural, endures for future generations. Through strategic actions like these, the International Mountain Tourism Alliance (IMTA) continues to lead the way in transforming mountain tourism into a global force for good, promoting a future where mountains are cherished, protected, and enjoyed by all.
