VANCOUVER—Hikers and adventure-seekers looking for an adrenalin-pumping activity at Whistler Peak can now walk across a suspension bridge swaying 2,000 metres above sea level at the popular mountain resort.

Since Canada Day, the number of visitors coming to see and experience the 130-metre Cloudraker Skybridge has been a surprise to Marc Riddell, spokesperson for Whistler Blackcomb, who said the official opening will be announced once the cantilever lookout at the end of the bridge is complete.

“You feel like you’re standing on a cage and you’re looking down. So you can actually look down and see Whistler Bowl below your feet,” Riddell said. “It’s probably the highest suspension bridge in North America. We haven’t found any other comparables.”

On the bridge, visitors can expect views overlooking the valley, lakes, and Whistler Village. Views stretch as far as Pemberton and includes Black Tusk, and Garibaldi Provincial Park.

One of those visitors to the bridge is lifestyle blogger Sara Chu, who went to Whistler at the end of June, before the soft opening.

Chu, who is afraid of heights, said the bridge looked frightening from the Peak chairlift she was riding in to get to the top of the mountain.

She said the experience of the bridge, compared to the Sky Pilot suspension bridge in nearby Squamish, could be more intimidating because the visitors can “see through” to the views below their feet where as the Sky Pilot has wooden platforms.

The “all-season” Cloudraker Skybridge is set to temporarily close July 16 for the installation of the West Ridge View Point. Riddell said they are hoping for a July 23 re-opening but construction factors may delay the re-opening.

Riddell added that the new investment is intended to make the mountains “as accessible as possible.”

“If you’re not a big mountain skier or mountaineer, you too can come up here and enjoy some of the things that we get enjoy on a daily basis.”
